“Being a bicycle novice I took my new road bike to the local bike shop for servicing for the first couple of services. 

The bike always came back with bits replaced but it never felt completely right and the gears never glided smoothly.  What is worse despite having taken my bike for a service a week before my first 100 mile ride - I had my chain snap during the ride and had the "new" bottom bracket perish within the month.
